How To Stretch Your Development


Ever wonder why some songs just grab your attention? That is what happened one day when I was driving home from a work meeting and heard Spirits by Strumbrellas. I had never heard it before but for some reason, it just stuck in my mind. As I listened to the lyrics I thought what in the world do they mean by guns in their head?

I got guns in my head and they won’t go
Spirits in my head and they won’t go

So of course, I had to look into this later. What was the songwriter thinking about when they wrote these words? Was there any meaning behind this catchy tune? And here is what I found at

“Spirits” is the first single off The Strumbellas’ first album on Glassnote Records, Hope. Lead singer Simon Ward described the song to Riff You, saying:

“Basically, the song is about fighting your inner demons. Trying to change and become a better person in life. I write songs to reflect where I’m at in life, and this song is me saying to the world that I’m doing my absolute best right now to be a good person.”

Do you feel as if you have guns in your head and they won’t go? Are you fighting the urge to change? We all struggle in life with our inner fears. Do you ever notice just about the time you are going to cross over from your former self to your newer “changed” self-something tries to drag you down and keep you there? It is like the pressure of gravity pulling at your arms, legs and even your soul.

A speaker at the 2015 Global Leadership Summit whose name is escaping me now talked about this tension like a rubber band. It is that moment right before you release. The tension is tight and pulling you back but when you let go it soars steps ahead. You do have to be careful not to stretch it too far or it will break but in order to project forward, we must be stretched.

What Makes You Happy?

You see the box sitting there in front of your door and are thankful it didn’t rain. Remember the good ole days when you signed for every piece of mail larger than your mailbox or the nice little note that told you to come pick it up? I digress. Yes I know I could just check the little box that says I have to sign for my package but knowing me I wouldn’t be there to actually get it.

When you see this box with excitement what is in your package? What gets your blood pumping and your heart pounding? This week in my small group we were listing to the Happy Series by Andy Stanley and one of the first questions was “What makes you happy?” and the answer “no thing”. This is true but it sure does make you happy for a moment.
